The History of the Blue Hawaii
The Blue Hawaii is one cocktail that historians are pretty sure they have the definitive origins of (unlike the Moscow Mule).
The Blue Hawaii was invented in 1957 by Harry Yee.
Yee was working the head bartender of the Hilton Hawaiian Village, when sale rep from the Dutch distiller Bols asked him to create a cocktail using Bols Blue Curacao.
After much experimentation, Yee settled for the mix we have today.
Where did the Blue Hawaii get it’s name?
A lot of people think the name of the cocktails come from the Elvis Presley Blue Hawaii movie, but the cocktail was actually created 4 years prior to the film being released.
The name actually comes from the 1937 Blue Hawaii song written by Leo Robin for the Bing Crosby Waikiki Wedding movie.
Interestingly, the song is also the title song for the Blue Hawaii movie too.
Now, let’s get to the cocktail.
How to Make a Blue Hawaii
As you might be able to tell from the name of the cocktail and my stunning description (it’s BLUE), one of the key ingredients of this cocktail is Blue Curarcao.
What is Blue Curacao?
You can read more about Blue Caracao in our what is blue curacao article, but the key points are:
- It’s blue and is a great mixer to add exotic colour to your cocktails.
- It’s alcoholic (ranging between 14-40% depending on the brand).
- It’s made from the peel of a Laraha fruit (which is a descendant of the Seville Orange).
What is the Best Vodka for Cocktails?
Another key ingredient you need for the Blue Hawaii recipe is Vodka.

It’s a good question.
