How Many Calories are in a Harvey Wallbanger?
Now that we’ve covered off Harvey Wallbanger ingredients, let’s take a look at how many calories the cocktail contains.
The History of the Harvey Wallbanger
Like most other cocktail recipes, the origin of the Harvey Wallbanger is laden with myth, fanciful tales and just a hint of truth.
For the Harvey Wallbanger, a more fanciful tale of the cocktail’s creation comes from a surfer named Tom.
The Tom Harvey Origin
This Harvey Wallbanger origin story focuses on a surfer called Tom Harvey.
Harvey frequented Manhattan Beach, California and would often finish a day of riding the waves by drinking Galliano-spiked Screwdrivers.
This often led him to stumble, drunkenly, into walls.
Get it? Harvey…wallbanger.
Terrible.
Regarding this story, noted Cocktail Historian Robert Simonson once said, “No sane person ever believed that story”…and it’s easy to agree with him.
The Accepted Origin Story
The most accepted story of the origin of the Harvey Wallbanger isn’t nearly as colourful as the Tom Harvey version, which probably means its true.
This origin suggests the Harvey Wallbanger was invented by bartender Donato “Duke” Antone at the Blackwatch Bar on Sunset Boulevard in the 1950s.
This claim is backed up by the fact that Antone did indeed come up with a number of Galliano-based cocktails in his time, such as the Italian Fascination, which consisted of Galliano, Kahula, Triple Sec and Sweet Cream.
If any more proof was needed, Antone also set up and ran a bartending school and started working with Galliano and Smirnoff as a corporate mixologist.
I think you can see why this is the accepted story, rather than it being about a drunk surfer who ran into walls.
