The Mermaid Mule is a great flex on the traditional Moscow Mule.
You get all the great flavours of a Moscow Mule, but with a dash of exotic. That exotic being Blue Curacao, the go-to ingredient to make any cocktail that much more exotic.
You make a Mermaid Mule by mixing Vodka, Lime Juice, Ginger Beer, and Blue Curacao in a Copper Mug.
Sounds good, right? And exotic. And Mermaidy.
Let’s get mixing.

First, let’s take a look at what you need to make a Mermaid Mule – or click here to jump directly to the recipe.
Vodka
Not so long ago, we compared different brands of Vodka and found a clear winner: Smirnoff Vodka.
Why? Because:
- Guaranteed quality
- Great price
- It’s the most bought Vodka on Amazon (UK).
We also reviewed it and confirmed the results.
Essentially, Smirnoff is a really great Vodka.

Blue Curacao
Blue Curacao is a liqueur made from the peel of a Laraha citrus fruit and then artificial coloured. It’s used to make cocktails a little more exotic (and also a little more boozy). You can read more about Blue Curacao here.

Where Did the Name Moscow Mule Come From?
The Mermaid Mule is an offshoot of the Moscow Mule, but why a mule? Why is it called a Moscow Mule?
Well, the Moscow part of the name comes from the fact that Vodka is the base alcohol for this drink. At the time of invention, Smirnoff Vodka was just getting off the ground in America and it’s thought the simple name association that came with Vodka was the reason behind the Moscow part.
So…what about mule? Where does that come from?
Mule comes from the kick you get from the fiery ginger beer in the drink. You know, Donkey kick? Mule?…you get the idea.
So where does mermaid fit into all of this?
Why is it called a Mermaid Mule?
Mermaid comes from the colour of the of the Cocktail.
The Blue Curacao really transforms the drink into something else and again word association (and probably a dab of alliteration) got us to Mermaid.
