Why is it called a Scarlett O’Hara Cocktail?

So…why exactly is the cocktail called a Scarlett O’Hara? Great question!

The short answer: it comes from the character of a movie!

Below you can see Vivien Leigh portraying Scarlett O’Hara on the Big Screen:

Vivien Leigh as Scarlett O'hara in Gone with the wind

Much like the Rhett Butler cocktail, this drink was named after a character in the classic Gone With the Wind movie.

Because the cocktail is said to have considerable southern charm, the drink was closely associated with the Southern Belle herself: Scarlett O’Hara character.

The cocktail was created around the same time as the movie’s release (1939/1940), so it was only natural the drink and the movie was closely related.

What is Southern Comfort?

Southern Comfort (aka SoCo) is an American Fruit-Flavoured Whiskey Liqueur.

It was created in 1874 when a man called Martin Wilkes Heron flavored bourbon with honey, citrus and spices.

Heron created the liqueur whilst working at McCauley’s Tavern, a saloon in New Orleans’ French Quarter and patented the concoction in 1889 when he moved to Memphis.

How to Garnish a Scarlett O’Hara Cocktail?

Scarlett O'Hara Recipe - Limes

The Scarlett O’Hara cocktail is traditionally garnished with a wedge of lime to enhance the lime juice that’s mixed in the recipe.

It works really well and adds an extra layer of freshness to the drink.

However, I’ve also experimented with Maraschino Cherries and they work well too.

Cocktail Shaker

Cocktail shakers improve the taste of cocktails. It’s a fact.

There’s a reason that famed British spy James Bonds says “shaken, not stirred”. And that reason is: because it tastes better.

If you don’t already have a cocktail shaker set, you might want to check out our detailed Cocktail Shaker comparison article.

But to cut a long story short, here’s the cocktail shaker we recommend:

Lemon Squeezer

Getting a lemon squeezer will change your life.

When you make as many cocktail as I do squeezing out lemons and limes, a lemon squeezer is a life saver. It makes it easier to get the juice and you also typically get more juice out of the fruit.

It just makes sense.

If you are interested in a Lemon Squeezer, here’s the one we recommend:

Cocktail Glass

This cocktail recipe tastes great, but let’s make it look great too.

Having the right glass for the right cocktail always makes the experience more enjoyable in my experience.

And the right glass is a cocktail glass.
